Patricia de Lille’s Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has been busy identifying buildings and land in all districts and metros to be used as quarantine sites for Corona Virus victims. This is to ensure there are enough places where infected people can go to quarantine safely and stop the spread of the virus.
“Some of these sites will also be available to people living in dense informal settlements.” - De Lille
The response has been overwhelming and indeed we are grateful for the generosity and solidarity being displayed by the private sector” said De Lille. They are assessing these sites too. In areas of the country where the national department doesn’t own buildings, the local municipalities and provincial governments will need to step in. Many provincial governments have already identified properties for possible quarantine sites. The Free State has identified the Trompsburg and Ladybrand hospitals as possible sites; KZN have properties available in Durban North, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay and Port Shepstone; Limpopo identifi ed four properties in Waterberg, Vhembe, Capricorn and Mopani districts and the North West said it has more than 130 sites across the province, including four hospitals. “Public land – owned any any sphere of government – must be used for the public good” said De Lille.
