GOOD Youth Demand Action On Gender Based Violence

GOOD people must not be silent when reported sex crimes are being hushed up and swept under the carpet.

“When we know about gender-based violence but choose to say nothing, we become part of the problem instead of the solution,” said GOOD MP Shaun August.

Shaun joined young members of GOOD in late June at their protest outside Table View High School to highlight alleged gender-based violence at the school.

The picket was led by GOOD youth activist, Kim Lee Scott. Kim was motivated to support the learners and to ask the school what processes the governing body was undertaking to deal with the allegations by the learners.

A memorandum was handed to the school principal with regards to a number of female learners who have reported sexual assault cases to their educators.

No action has been taken by the school, its management team or the governing body to address these very serious allegations.

According to reports in the media, the principal responded to one of the allegations of sexual assault by stating that what happens during break times at school is not her responsibility. The youth in GOOD is committed to supporting young people to break the silence, report crime and insist on their rights to safety and justice.

Violence against women and children has spiked during the Covid19 pandemic. It brings shame on all South Africans,” Kim said.

She thanked those who joined the demonstration at Table View and urged them to continue contributing to the struggle for social justice.
