A GOOD Cure For Fake News

Dear friends, Sometimes it feels that media is all around us, but none of it speaks our language. We see politicians being onbeskof to each other on TV, but it feels like another country because none of what they say or do seems to have anything to do with us.

We read about the launch of exciting new programmes, only to read a few months later that they are vrot with corruption. We hear them accusing each other of beating their wives, as if the plague of violence in our homes is some kind of a joke…

It doesn’t need to be like this. South Africa is not a poor country. There are enough resources for everyone to be able to eat and hold their head high. We need to focus on managing the resources better, and holding those we elect to represent us accountable for their work. We established the GOOD Movement about a year ago when we realised that the DA and ANC were so consumed with insulting each other in Cape Town that there was no hope of building an integrated city that actually cares for all its people. We don’t exist to fight for power against other parties, but to fight for the good of all people. It is a disgrace that after all the suffering of apartheid forced removals we have yet to see one housing development for our people in a former white neighbourhood. It is a disgrace that we claim Cape Town is a world class city, when so many of our people live in backyard hokkies and shacks. It is a disgrace that the poorest people in Cape Town pay the most for water and public transport, if there is any, and suffer the greatest burden of crime… that 26 years into our democracy we haven’t addressed the social and environmental conditions that breed gangsters and drug addicts, and maintain the poverty cycle. Instead of simply joining the media bun-fight and hoping for the best, we are very proud to bring you the first edition of the Waarheid !. Here we will share stories that inspire us, while not hiding away from the truth. I have opposed injustice for my entire life, and continue to do so today. I invite you to join me on this platform to help build communities and a country in which your children and grandchildren can reach their dreams. Contact the editor on (021) 518-0890
